“Aussie-Chevs” word vyftig

Tot en met die laat 1960’s het General Motors Suid-Afrikaanse modelreekse bemark onder dieselfde kentekens wat hulle in hul lande van herkoms gehad het. Dit het beteken dat modelle van Chevrolet, Holden, Vauxhall, Opel en Pontiac dieselfde name as hul oorsese eweknieë gehad het, selfs al het plaaslike inhoudsvereistes beteken dat die enjins verskil het. In 1968 het dinge begin verander toe die plaaslik ontwikkelde Ranger eerder as die Vauxhall Victor FD in Suid-Afrika bekendgestel is.

 

In 1969 het General Motors Suid-Afrika (GMSA) die volgende stap geneem en die Chevrolet- kenteken vir plaaslik ontwikkelde weergawes van die Holden HK-reeks aangebring. GMSA het destyds twee handelaarsnetwerke gehad; een vir Opel en Chevrolet en die ander een vir Vauxhall, Holden en Pontiac. Die Chevrolet Nova, wat in 1968 vervang sou word, is heeltemal aan die mark onttrek terwyl dieselfde met die Chevelle, waarvan ‘n nuwe model net die vorige jaar bekendgestel is, ook gebeur het. Pleks daarvan is ‘n reeks van drie Holden-gebaseerde modelle met Chevrolet- kentekens bekendgestel. Die Kommando, Kommando LS en Constantia was onderskeidelik op die Holden Kingswood, Premier en Brougham gebaseer; die Brougham was net nooit in Suid-Afrika op die mark nie.

 

Die Kommando was die goed-koopste model, en was beskikbaar met 3,8- en 4,1 liter-enjins (hulle is die 230 en 250 genoem na aanleiding van hul enjinkapasiteit in kubieke duim) en ‘n keuse van ‘n driegang hand-ratkas en ‘n Powerglide-outomatiese ratkas met net twee gange. Die Kommando was beskikbaar as ‘n sedan en ‘n stasiewa. Die middelste model was die Kommando LS, wat klein afwerking verskille gehad het en onder meer ‘n gesplete banksitplek met ‘n arm leuning gehad het. Die bekleedsel was ook van ‘n beter gehalte. Die buite-afwerking het ook weinig verskil, met veral die wieldoppe en ‘n opsionele vinieldak wat hom van sy goedkoper stalmaat onderskei het. Daar was ook ‘n bykomende enjinkeuse, naamlik ‘n 250 HO (High Output), ‘n kragtiger weergawe van die 250- enjin. Die Constantia was die luukse model van die reeks en kon onderskei words deur middel van ‘n langer asafstand as die ander twee modelle, asook binneafwerking wat elektriese vensters ingesluit het. Die hele reeks se rathefbome of ratkiesers was aan die stuurkolom, ongeag die motor se ratkas.

 

Teen die einde van 1969 is die eerste detail veranderinge aangekondig, om saam te val met die bekendstelling van die Holden HT-reeks. Die groot verandering was aan die binnekant, waar die lang spoedmeter deur ‘n instrumentepaneel met ronde wyserplate vervang is. Daar was ook ‘n belangrike nuwe enjinkeuse: die Constantia-reeks is uitgebrei met die toevoeging van die 308 (vyfliter) V8. Die verskil tussen die Constantia en die Premier V8 was dat dit ‘n luukse- eerder as ‘n sportiewe model was aangesien die Premier V8 in wese ‘n HT Monaro GTS met vier deure was en met afsonderlike sitplekke voor en ‘n ratkieser op die vloer toegerus was.

 

Die hele reeks is onveranderd gelaat vir 1970, maar in Februarie 1971 het GMSA besluit om sy bedrywighede in Suid-Afrika te rasionaliseer. Holden en Vauxhall is aan die Suid-Afrikaanse mark onttrek, terwyl produksie van die Opel Rekord en die Vauxhall Viva gestaak is. Dié twee modelle is deur die Ranger, wat toe reeds drie jaar op die mark was, en die Vauxhall Viva HC-gebaseerde Chevrolet Firenza vervang word en die hele reeks is net deur een handelaarsnetwerk versprei. Die onttrekking van Holden het beteken dat twee nuwe Chevrolet-modelle bygevoeg is. Die Monaro GTSis deur die Chevrolet SS-koepee, met ‘n keuse van die 308- en 350 (5,7 liter)-enjins en ‘n hand-of outomatiese ratkas vervang. Die El Camino, gebaseer op die Holden Belmont-bakkie is ook bekendgestel, met drie enjinkeuses. Die Holden 186 (drieliter)-enjin was in Suid-Afrika net vir die El Camino beskikbaar, maar die 250 en 308-enjins was dalk gewilder. Die groot meganiese verandering was die bekendstelling van ‘n nuwe driegang-outomatiese ratkas, bekend as die Tri-Matic, wat van Australië afkomstig was.

Die plaasvervanger vir hierdie modelreeks was toe al byna gereed vir bekendstelling in Australië, en die Holden HQ-reeks het inderdaad sy verskyning in Julie 1971 gemaak. Die gewildheid van dié reeks het gemaak dat Suid-Afrika lank vir hulle moes wag. Die eerste drie modelle wat hier bekendgestel is, was die Kommando-stasiewa, die Constantia en ‘n nuwe vlagskip, bekend as die De Ville. Die Constantia was nie meer so luuks soos voorheen nie, en al drie hierdie modelle het dieselfde asafstand gehad. Daar was ‘n keuse tussen die 4,1 liter HO- en die vyfliter V8-enjin. Die De Ville safwerking was besonder luuks, en kenmerke soos afsonderlike sitplekke met ‘n ratkieser op die vloer, lugversorging, elektriese vensters en ‘n vinieldak was alles standaardtoerusting. Die De Ville was net met die 5,7 liter V8-enjin beskikbaar. Die El Camino, met die gewone 4,1 liter-enjin en ‘n keuse van ‘n hand- of outomatiese ratkas of die vyfliter V8-enjin met ‘n outomatiese ratkas het net voor die einde van 1972 gevolg.

 

Die reeks is vroeg in 1973 uitgebrei met die langverwagte bekendstelling van die Kommando-sedan, wat op die Holden HQ Kingswood en Premier gebaseer was. Die 3,8 liter-enjin is aan die mark onttrek en net vir die Opel Commodore-gebaseerde Chevrolet 3800 gebruik. Hoewel ‘n Monaro GTS deel van die Australiese reeks was, het GMSA besluit om nie weer ‘n koepee in Suid-Afrika bekend te stel nie. Die reeks het bestaan uit die Kommando-sedan met die gewone 4,1 liter-enjin en ‘n hand-of outomatiese ratkas en die Kommando LS, met die 4,1 liter HO-enjin en ‘n outomatiese ratkas. Die Kommando LS was inderdaad beter as die Constantia 4,1 afgewerk, en afsonderlike sitplekke met ‘n armleuning tussenin en kopstutte was standaardtoerusting al was die ratkieser steeds aan die stuurkolom. Aan die begin van die 1974-modeljaar is twee groot veranderinge aan die passasiersmodelle aangebring; straallaagbande het standaardtoerusting geword en ‘n groot verskil aan die motors se padhouvermë gemaak terwyl hul werkverrigting en brandstofverbruik verbeter het met die bekendstelling van die nuwe Turbo-Hydramatic- outomatiese ratkas. Die laaste toevoeging tot die reeks was die El Toro, ‘n eentonweergawe van die El Camino, maar met unieke buitestilering en ‘n viergang-handratkas met ‘n rathefboom op die vloer. Hierdie model is vroeg in 1974 by die reeks gevoeg.

 

Die eerste, en op die ou einde laaste, groot veranderinge aan die reeks is teen die einde van 1975 aangekondig. Die Kommando LS en Constantia se afwerking was nou baie nader aan mekaar en die Kommando- en El Camino-reekse is toegerus met ‘n lang spoedmeter terwyl die Constantia ‘n nuwe instrumentepaneel met reghoekige wyserplate gekry het. Daar was ook ‘n nuwe vlagskip. Die De Ville is vervang deur die Caprice Classic, wat die vyfliterenjin, eerder as die 5,7 liter-enjin gekry het. Die stasiewa was ook van toe af ‘n Constantia eerder as ‘n Kommando, maar hy was steeds net met die 4,1 liter-enjin beskikbaar.

 

Hoewel die Holden-reeks nog twee keer groot veranderinge ondergaan het, het GMSA teen omtrent 1978 aangekondig dat dié reeks aan die mark onttrek is. Die Chevrolet Commodore het al hoe gewilder geword en die brandstofkrisisse van die 1970’s het hulle op die ou einde onbemarkbaar gemaak.
