Nadat Ford onlangs sy opgekanpte Ranger en Everest bekend gestel het, is die bakkie waarna soveel geesdriftiges uitgesien het, in Suid-Afrika beskikbaar. Die Ranger Raptor, wat net met vierwiel aandrywing beskikbaar is, kan as Suid-Afrika se eerste hoë werk-verrigtings-bakkie beskou word.

Volgens Ford is die Raptor ‘n heeltemal nuwe tipe bakkie wat nuwe standaarde stel in tegnologie, innovering en bestuursgenot.  “Ons is baie opgewonde om die verrigtings-weergawe van die Ford Ranger, wat ook in ons fabriek in Silverton, Pretoria, vervaardig word, bekend te stel, “sê Doreen Mashinini, die algemene bemarkings bestuurder van die Ford-motor-maatskappy.  Volgens haar is die Raptor gemik op ‘n heeltemal ander tipe koper ; dit kombineer aggressiewe stilering met veldryvermoë wat beter as dié van sy mededingers is.

Die buitestilering gee reeds ‘n aanduiding dat die Raptor enstig opgeneem moet word. Die ryhoogte is 51mm hoër en sy grondvy-hoogte is 283mm, terwyl sy spoorwydte 150mm breër voor en agter is as die ‘gewone” Ranger.  Die sierrooster spog met groot FORD-letters, en anders as wat die geval met die uiters gewilde Raptor bakstelle was, is hierdie een die ware Jakob. Die Raptor is beskikbaar in Ford se Performance Blue, asook skakerings van swart, wit, grys en rooi, met kontrasterende grys Dyno-grys aksente. Die voorste modderskerms is vervaardig van duursame saamgestelde material vir opwindende veldry-avonture terwyl die voorstamper LED-misligte bevat. Die uitgeboude vorm van die modderskerms  is ontwerp om die BF Goodrich-veldrybande wat spesifiek vir die Raptor ontwikkel is, asook ‘n spesiaal aangepaste veerstelsel, te huisves.

Die Ford Performance-tema word ook aan die binnekant voortgesit. Die sportsitplekke is met suede oorgetrek vir maksimum  klouvermoë tydens hoë verrigting-veldry toestande terwyl dit ook uiters gemaklik in stedelike toestande is. Die sitplekke beskik ook oor blou stikwerk en leer-aksente terwyl die aggressief gestileerde instrumente-paneel oor rooi naalde beskik. Die stuurwiel beskik oor geperforeerde leer vir die handgreep-gedeeltes en die Raptor-embleem kom in die onderste speek voor. Een kenmerk wat deur motorsport geïnspireer is, is ‘n rooi merk bo-aan die stuurwiel wat aandui wanneer die voertuig se wiele reguit is. Daar is ook ratspane vir vinnige ratwisseling sonder ‘n koppelaar.

Natuurlik help ‘n aggressiewe voorkoms niks as die kragbron nie geloof-waardig is nie, en die Raptor se enjin en ratkas stel nie teleur nie. Die tweeliter-diesel enjin met twee turbo-aanjaers wat sy buiging in sekere Ranger- en Everest-modelle gemaak het, is standaard toerusting tesame met ‘n outomatiese ratkas met nie minder nie as tien gange.  Die enjin lewer 157kW teen 3 750 opm en wringkrag van 500 Nm teen tussen 1 500 en 2 000 opm. Hierdie syfers word moontlik gemaak deur twee turbo-aanjaers; ‘n kleiner hoëdruk-eenheid en ‘n goter laedrukeenheid wat optimale werkverrigting lewer ongeag die enjinsnelheid. Die enjin is onder die strafste moontlike toestande getoets en daarom sal dit enige toestande kan baasraak. Die ratkas is só ontwikkel dat die mees geskikte rat vir enige moontlike situasie, soos wanneer ‘n woonwa gespeel word, geskies word en ratspane agter die stuurwiel is ‘n kenmerk wat eie aan die Raptor is.

Om die Raptor se veldryvermoë verder te onderstreep, is daar ‘n Baja-modus wat deur die Baja-woestynwedren in Mexiko geïnspireer is en hoëverrigting-veldry moontlik maak. In hierdie modus word die vastrapbeheer ingeperk om die beste moontlike werkverrigting moontlik te maak sonder dat die voertuig se aanboord-stelsels inmeng.  Ratwisseling word ook geprogrammeer vir werkverrigting; die voertuig sal langer in dieselfde rat bly en skakeling na ‘n laer rat sal meer aggressief geskied.

Die elektroniese kragstuur is gebaseer op die stelsel wat in die Everest 4×4-modelle gebruik word en bevat ‘n volle reeks bestuursmodusse, naamlik Normaal, Sport, Gras/Grondpad/Sneeu, Modder/Sand en Rots.

Die Raptor se remstelsel is aangepas in vergelyking met sy stalmaats; daar is geventileerde skyfremme op die voor- en agterwiele, terwyl spesiale FOX-skokbrekers vir die Raptor ontwikkel is.  Die 285/70 R 17 BF Goodrich-bande is ook spesiaal vir die Raptor ontwikkel en gemaak vir uiterste veldrytoestande.

Aan die binnekant is die SYNC 3-inligting-en-vermaakstelsel wat in sommige ander Ranger- en Everest-modelle aangetref word. Die Raptor het egter ‘n unieke kenmerk wat ‘n spoor in onherbergsame gebiede los; ideaal vir die ernstige veldryer. Aangesien veiligheid ‘n prioriteit is, word die Raptor toegerus met Ford se stabiliteits program wat bakrolbeheer insluit. Dit bevat sensors wat stuurtraagheid, stuuroory-werigheid en bakrol bespeur en tot die minimum beperk.

Die prys van die Ford Ranger Raptor, is R 786 400. Soos met die res van die Ranger-reeks sluit dit ‘n waarborg van vier jaar of 120 000 km en ‘n diensplan van ses jaar of 90 000 km in, asook ‘n waarborg teen korrosie van vyf jaar en padbystand van drie jaar, ongeag die voertuig se kilometer afstand.
