Morgan is nou in Italiaanse besit.

Een van die oudste Britse motorvervaardigers, Morgan, het aangekondig dat ‘n Italiaanse beleggingsmaatskappy ‘n meerderheidsaandeel in die Morgan-maatskappy bekom het.

Morgan, wat klassieke sportmotors vervaardig en in 1909 ontstaan het, was een van die min waarlik Britse motor vervaardigers wat nog oorgebly het, maar die Morgan-familie sal steeds minderheids-aandele besit en as rentmeesters optree. Vir die erste keer in die geskiedenis sal die bestuurspan en al die werknemers van die maastkappy aandeelhouers wees. Dit beteken egter nie dat Morgan in finansiële moeilikheid is nie en wanneer die transaksie in April afgehandel word, sal Morgan steeds in ‘n sterk finansiële posisie wees.

Investindustrial, met wie die transaksie aangegaan word, is ‘n Europese beleggings groep wat onafanklik bestuur word en bedryfs-oplossings en kapitaal aan middelmark-maatskappye in Europa bied. Die groep se doelwit is om aktief by te dra tot die ontwikkeling van die maatskappye waarin dit belê deur geleenthede vir groei te skep en globale oplossings deur middel van ‘n ondernemede pan- Europese visie te bied. Investindustrial is al meer as 28 jaar lank in suksesvolle vennootskappe met Europese ondernemings betrokke. Investindustrial besit ook aandele in die sport motor-vervaardiger Aston Martin en die motorfiets vervaardiger Ducati.

Volgens Jill Price, die langsdienende direkteur en familielid, is al die moontlike opsies vir die voortgesette sukses van Morgan oorweeg en daar is bevind dat die nuwe struktuur van eienaarskap en Investindustrial se meerderheidsaandeel die beste manier was om die maatskappy se toekoms te verseker.

Die jongste toevoeging tot Morgan se reeks is die Plus Six, wat by die Geneefse Motorskou bekendgestel word. Hoewel dit herkenbaar ‘n Morgan is en die stileringskenmerke waarvoor die maatskappy bekendheid verwerf het, behou, is die Plus Six die eerste model wat op die nuwe CX- platform gebou word. Hierdie platform is ligter as voorheen en sal voortaan vir Morgan se hoëverrigtingmodelle gebruik word. Die Plus Six word toegerus met ‘n turbo aangejaagde BMW- drieliterenjin met ses silinders en ‘n Sport Steptronic-ratkas met agt gange is standaardtoerusting. Hierdie enjin lewer 250 kW teen 6 500 opm en wrinkgrag van 500 Nm teen tussen 1 600 en 4 500 opm, en word ook in die nuwe Toyota GR Supra gebruik. Die Plus 6 vul die gaping tussen die Plus 4 en die Roadster.

Die Morgan 3-Wheeler, gebaseer op die heel eerste ontwerp wat dié maatskappy vervaardig het, is in 2011 opnuut bekendgestel. Die nuwe weergawe word toegerus met ‘n V-tweesilinder enjin met ‘n verplasings inhoud van twee liter, wat 61 kW teen 5 250 opm en wringkrag van 140 Nm teen 3 250 opm. Die elektriese weergawe van die 3-Wheeler, bekend as die EV 3 Junior, is in 2016 bekendgestel. Hierdie model is op jong aspirant-Morgan-eienaars gemik en kan ‘n topsnelheid van 160 km/h behaal. Die EV 3 Junior word in sy geheel met die hand vervaardig en beskik or ‘koolvesel- bakwerk en ‘n binneruim met handgestikte leerbek-leedsel.

Die Morgan 4/4 is die motor wat die langste in produksie in die wêreld is; die eerste model is in 1936 bekendgestel, maar deur die jare is dit voort-durend verbeter om by veranderende omstandighede aan te pas. Soos alle Morgans word die 4/4 met die hand vervaardig, en hoewel die motor se paneelbord gewoonlik dieselfde kleur as die bakwerk is, is handgemaakte hout afwerking ook beskikbaar. Die 4/4 word toegerus met ‘n 1,6 liter Ford-enjin wat 82 kW teen 6 000 opm en wringkrag van 131 Nm lewer.

Morgan se gewildste model is die Plus 4, wat toegerus word met ‘n tweeliter Ford-enjin wat 115 kW teen 6 000 opm en wringkrag van 201 Nm lewer.Volgens die vervaardigers kombineer die Plus 4 die stilering en karakter van ‘n klassieke sportmotor met die betroubaarheid van ‘n nuwe motor. Een interessante bykomstigheid waarmee die Plus 4 beskikbaar is, is ‘n dak en syvensterskerms in sybokhaar wat in enige kleur beskikbaar is en beter beskerming bied wanneer die dak opgeslaan is. Dit kan teen ekstra koste pleks van die gewone PVC bestel word.

Die kragtigste model in Morgan se reeks is die Roadster, met ‘n 3,7 liter V6 enjin wat ook van Ford afkomstig is; hierdie enjin lewer 209 kW teen 6 000 opm en het ‘n wringkrag van 380 Nm. Die Roadster het ‘n paneel onder die sier-rooster in die plek van ‘n stamper wat hom ‘n meer sportiewe en doel gerigte voorkoms gee. Dié voorkoms word deur die twee uitlaatpype versterk.

Steve Morris, die uitvoerende hoof van Morgan Motor Company, glo dat dié maatskappy ‘n blink toekoms het. Die afgelope twee jaar is ‘n rekordgetal voertuie verkoop en met die bekendstelling van die Plus Six en Investindustrial se meerderheidsaandeel is die maatskappy gereed om sy potensiaal verder te verwesenlik.
