Sedert sy aanvanklike bekendstelling is die Toyota Land Cruiser Prado die erkende koning van viewielaangedrewe voertuie op die Sud-Afrikaanse mark.

Die Prado is uniek in die sin dat hy ware veldryvermoë, ‘n hoë vlak van afwerking en standaardtoerusting, duursaamheid, betroubaarheid en prestige kombineer. Vir die 2018-modeljaar het die Prado egter ‘n paar veranderinge ondergaan.

Die reeks sal voortaan met drie afwerkingsvlakke beskikbaar wees. Die TX en VX word aangevul deur ‘n nuwe vlagskipmodel, wat as die VX-L bekend sal staan. Die TX se standaardkenmerke sluit outomatiese klimaatbeheer in, asook ‘n tru-kamera, ‘n elektries verstelbare bestuurdersitplek, sleutellose toegang, parkeersensors, Bluetooth-verbinding, drie 12-volt kragsokke, ‘n USB-sok en spoedbeheer.

Die VX en VX-L-modelle het boonop ‘n kamera wat wys wat rondom die voertuig gebeur, ‘n klankstelsel met veertien luidsprekers, ‘n multi-inligtingspaneel, kantel-en teleskopiese verstellings vir die stuurkolom met kraghulp, LED-kopligte en ‘n derde ry sitplekke wat met kraghulp platgeslaan kan word.

Die VX-L het ook ‘n elektriese sondak wat kan kantel en oopskuif en verskeie bykomende veiligheidskenmerke, soos aanpasbare spoedbeheer, ‘n waarskuwing as jy per abuis op die oop pad uit jou baan beweeg asook ‘n stelsel wat jou waarsku as daar ‘n voetganger naby die voertuig is.

Die VX en VX-L het ook ‘n blindekol-monitor en ‘n waaskuwingstelsel as daar verkeer agter die voertuig is. Dan is daar sewe lugsakke, sluitweerremme met elektroniese remverspreiding en swaaibeheer vir ‘n sleepwa of woonwa om vir derdere veiligheid te sorg.

Onder die enjinkap is alles nog presies dieselfde. ‘n Keuse van twee enjins is steeds beskikbaar.  Die turbo-aangejaagde dieselenjin van drie liter lewer 120 Kw teen 3 400 opm en ‘n wringkrag van 400 Nm  tussen 1 600 en 2 800 opm. Die ander enjinkeuse is die V6-petrolenjin van vier liter. Hierdie enjin lewer 202 Kw teen 5 600 opm en het ‘n wringkrag van 381 Nm teen 4 400 opm. Albei enjins kom met outomatiese ratkaste, met onderskeidelik vyf en ses gange as standaardtoerusting.

Die buite-stilering van die Prado is aansienlik opgeknap. Die algehele lengte is met 40 mm verleng, maar sy draaisirkel van slegs 5,8 meter maak dat hy tog maklik is om te hanteer.  Die vooraansig bevat heelwat nuwe kenmerke, soos ‘n herontwerpte rooster, kopligte en wielnisse. Daar is misligte in die onderste hoeke van die voorste stampers. Die uitstaande kenmerk van die kantaansig is die nuwe wiele; 17-duim sierwiele vir die TX en 18-duim geverfde hoëglans-vellings vir die VX en VX-L-modelle.  Die agterligsamestelling is ook splinternuut terwyl die agterstamper herontwerp is en die nommerplaathulsel kleiner is as voorheen. Die voorpaneel bevat ‘n multimediaskerm van agt duim in volkleur, instrumente vir die voertuig se dryfstelsel en kontroles vir die klimaatbeheer. Die middelkonsole het ‘n metaalagtige silwer afwerking en aan weerkante is daar sagte panele wat die bestuurder en voorste passasier se knieë beskerm.

Die herontwerpte instrumentepaneel het vier Optitron-meters met hoë definisie agtergrondbeligting. In die VX en VX-L-modelle is dit aan weerskante van ‘n TFT-volkleurskerm van 4,2 duim met omvattende voertuig- en vermaakinligting, wat deur middel van kontroles op die stuurwiel beheer word. Die stuurwiel self word in ‘n kombinasie van hout en leer afewerk en word met die groter Land Cruiser 200 gedeel. Daar is twee kleure vir die binnekant beskikbaar, naamlik swart met dowwe okkerneuthoutafwering of beige met ‘n moderne dowwe “blondehout”-afwerking.

Die VX en VX-L-modelle het ‘n veelterreinstelsel as standaardtoerusting verkry. Dit word met ‘n draaiknop op die middelste konsole beheer en laat die bestuurder die korrekte bestuursmodus vir die pad vorentoe kies. Hierdie stelsel het vyf voorafgeprogrammeerde pakkette, naamlik modder en sand, los klip, gruis, klippe en grond en klip, om die voertuig se kloubeheer, transmissie-eienskappe, kraglewering en verings-verstellings by die terrein aan te pas. Die VX en VX-L het ook afdraandebeheer. Die V6-modelle het ook ‘n Drive Mode Select-program; die bestuurder kan kies tussen gemak, sport, sport+, gewoon en ekonomies; dit pas die voertuig se dinamiese eienskappe aan by die bestuurder se voorkeur.

Die hele reeks word gerugsteun deur ‘n waarborg van drie jaar of 100 000 km en ‘n  diensplan van vyf jaar of 90 000km.
